When a Fractional CTO Makes Sense

You may not need a full-time CTO, but you might need CTO-level thinking. How to tell when part-time technology leadership is the right move.

STRATEGYLEADERSHIP

Most growing businesses reach a point where technology decisions start to matter more: which systems to invest in, whether to build or buy, how to keep data secure, who to hire. A full-time CTO is a big commitment at that stage, and often more than the business needs.

A fractional CTO gives you experienced technology leadership for a set number of days or hours, scaled up or down as the work demands.

Signs you need technical leadership

  • Technology decisions keep getting deferred. Nobody feels qualified to make the call, so nothing moves.
  • Vendors are setting your roadmap. Suppliers recommend what they sell, not necessarily what you need.
  • Your developers lack direction. Capable people without someone to review architecture and priorities can build the wrong thing well.
  • Systems don't talk to each other. Data lives in silos and the team fills the gaps by hand.
  • You're about to spend significant money on technology and want an independent view first.

Signs you don't, yet

Not every business needs ongoing leadership. If your systems are stable, your team is small and nothing major is planned, a periodic review may be enough.

The advantage of a fractional arrangement is that you don't have to decide once and for all. You can start small and scale up only when there is real work to lead.

What a good fractional CTO does

  • Builds a technology roadmap tied to business goals
  • Gives unbiased advice on vendors and platforms
  • Reviews and guides your developers or agencies
  • Helps you hire the right technical people when the time comes
  • Keeps an eye on security, cost and risk
